Atrial fibrillation, sometimes called "a fib", is a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate. It can be associated with palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath and tiredness. In atrial fibrillation, the heart's upper chambers (atria) contract randomly and sometimes so fast that the heart muscle cannot relax properly between contractions. This reduces the heart's efficiency and performance.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disturbance. Irish research has shown that 3.2% of the total population aged over 50, 5.3% in the over 65’s and almost 11% in those aged over 80 years old have atrial fibrillation. It is more likely to happen in people with high blood pressure, ischaemic heart disease, and heart valve issues. Having atrial fibrillation is also a risk factor for stroke. Chronic Disease Management (CDM) is individualised, but in the main for atrial fibrillation relates to detection, heart rate control and anticoagulation, as well as other options including interventions with cardiology.

The Chronic Disease Management (CDM) programme is not suitable nor intended for emergencies. The CDM programme is meant for patients with established diseases and conditions, which have been previously diagnosed and initial management commenced and/or completed, either at Mungret Medical Centre or elsewhere. General Practitioner Services

For GMS (Medical Card, DVC, Under 6's, Over 70's) and Private Patients of all ages. This covers a wide variety of general presentations, issues, and conditions, as well as gender-specific health issues.

Blood Tests (Phlebotomy)

Mungret Medical Centre has a full blood taking (phlebotomy) service. Generally, most blood tests do not require a fasting period beforehand. If, you do need to fast, please do not eat anything for 12 hours before your blood test, but you can drink water and take your medications as normal.

Vaccination (Immunisations)

Ireland has a national childhood vaccination (immunisation) programme, which is delivered by Mungret Medical Centre. Additionally, we provide vaccines such as influenza (seasonal flu) vaccines and travel.

Chronic Disease Management

The aim of Chronic Disease Management (CDM) is to make changes now to lessen the burden of diseases in the short term, and their effect on our patients' lives, but also to reduce the risk of significant adverse events occurring in future for certain conditions.

Cryosurgery (Cryotherapy)

Cryosurgery is the application of extremely low temperatures to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue and is used most commonly to treat skin conditions. Mungret Medical Centre has special facilities to store and use liquid nitrogen (-195.8 Celsius) for our cryosurgery services.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitors

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is when your blood pressure is measured as you move around, living your normal daily life. It is measured for up to 24 hours. A small digital blood pressure monitor is attached to a belt around your waist and connected to a cuff around your upper arm.

Mantoux Skin Testing (TB Screening)

The Mantoux test or also known as Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) and Mendel–Mantoux test, is a tool for screening for tuberculosis (TB) amongst other indications. It requires two visits to Mungret Medical Centre, first to administer the tuberculin and then to read it 48 hours to 72 hours later.

QuantiFERON Testing (TB Screening)

QuantiFERON testing is a set of blood tests, taken at one visit, often required for educational and work placements. Similar to the Mantoux text there are several indications for QuantiFERON testing, and the test itself should be considered with other investigations and symptoms.

Vision Screening

A comprehensive screening programme can provide a general overview of employee’s visual disorders, detecting those where corrective action should be taken. Vision screening tests are a means of identifying individuals with defective vision who need a full eyesight test.‍
